2017 Photography Exhibition

Seeing beyond 50 into the future

The Rejuvenation exhibition commissioned by Impact Initiatives and originally shown in 2017 was designed to challenge stereotypes of older people and to highlight the  many ways in which they contribute to our City.

Our photographer Maria Scard has an amazing talent for engaging people and capturing images which tell a story. To bring the exhibition to life she spent many weeks meeting people and listening to what they would like us to know.

This year’s  Ageing Well Festival brings the ideal opportunity to show these striking images once again. They will be on show in the City’s Leisure Centres from September 30th.

The United Nations estimate that between 2015 & 2030, the number of older persons worldwide is set to increase by 56%; from 901 million to more than 1.4 billion. By 2030, the number of people aged 60 & above will exceed that of young people aged 15 to 24.

It is therefore, more important than ever that the generations work together, acknowledging the part that each plays in contributing to a brighter future.

“Community is so important, because we support each other, without community you can’ t do anything. We get together as a group of women to spend some time together chatting eating and laughing, planning. It’s a time we can dress up, try and forget any stress and plan what we want to do next”

– Husnul, 50

In the portraits the subject is placed in the background, or slightly obstructed, inviting the viewer to look beyond their assumptions and see the amazing older people that make up the city of Brighton.

So whatever your age, please take the time to visit the exhibit, read the stories and examine the portraits of those aged 50+ in Brighton, and as you do, be inspired to join in and write your own story, one where each chapter is more exciting than the one that went before.
